Omaha Beach was a landing areas of the Normandy Invasion of World War II. Soldiers were killed by defending fire from German troops placed on heights surrounding the beach. More than 160 thousands American Canadian and British troops crammed onto a 50-mile stretch of French coastline to open up a second front against Adolf Hitler. At the same time nearly 13 thousands American paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines to cause chaos and capture critical roadways.
